FUN SCHOOL 4 (5 TO 7)
*********************
Following last months review of the
fun School package for the under 5's
here is a review for the next package
up, age wise, in the series.
Like it's younger counterpart this is
a set of six programs covering a
variety of educational topics and
linked by the antics of a character,
in this case Freddy the frog.
The six games on the disk are;
Log Cabin where you must help Freddy
to build his log house by solving
some number problems. At the easiest
level this involves addition and
subtraction sums but by level 4 the
user is tackling multiplication and
division up to the 12 times table.
Library is a game where books must be
sorted out into alphabetical order,
beginning with initial letters and
single words and moving up to real
book titles and author's names.
Opposites has you finding, you've
guessed it, the opposites of common
words displayed on lily pads in
Freddy's pond. On higher levels this
is not easy, the child needs quite a
high reading level to be able to read
the words. At all levels a variety of
alternative
words is given for the child to chose
from.
Typing is a very simple looking word
processor type program, the aim is to
get children used to using the
keyboard on the computer.
Shopkeeper is about money, coins and
giving change. At level one the child
simply selects the correct coin to pay
for a certain item in the shop. On
level four the user adds together the
cost of a number of items and
calculates the amount of change to be
given.
In Basketball the child has to complete
simple sequences of letters, numbers
and pairs of letters or numbers,
ranging from numbers going up in ones
at level one to square numbers and
reverse alternate letters of the
alphabet in level four.
Each game has been designed to be
simple to use and correct answers are
always rewarded with music or animation
of some kind, that is bound to appeal
to children of the relevant age range.
All the screens are colourful and the
use of a main character helps give
something to aim for whilst playing
the games.
Fun School 4 (5 to 7) is available
from all good computer shops. The
recommended price is about 25.00 but
it can be bought for much less if you
shop around.
All in all a very good value package
that will appeal to children and
provides a great learning environment.
particularly if a parent is prepared
to sit with the child as they work.
